OpenClaw vs OpenWebUI: which self-hosted AI platform do you actually need?
OpenClaw and OpenWebUI come up in the same Google search so often that most people assume they are competitors. They are not. They solve different problems. If you are picking between them you are almost certainly asking the wrong question. Here is the distinction that matters and the deployment choice that falls out of it.
The one-line difference
OpenWebUI is a chat interface. You host it, point it at a model, and your team talks to the AI in a browser. It is the self-hosted version of ChatGPT.
OpenClaw is an agent runtime. You host it, point it at a model, and it receives messages on Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, email, and other channels, takes actions on your behalf, and reports back. It is the self-hosted version of a personal assistant that lives in your existing tools.
OpenWebUI is where humans go to talk to an AI. OpenClaw is an AI that shows up in the platforms humans already use and does work. The distinction looks subtle until you try to use the wrong one for your problem, at which point it becomes very expensive.

Pick OpenWebUI if
You have a team of people who want a ChatGPT-like web app they can log into with their work accounts, switch between models, upload documents for RAG, and use as their general-purpose LLM interface. You want per-user access control, usage dashboards, and a familiar chat UI. You are not trying to get the AI to act on the world, you are trying to get humans safe and capable access to models.
This is a good fit for a lot of teams. Drop it on a VPS, wire it up to Anthropic or OpenAI or a local Ollama model, and your team gets a self-hosted alternative to ChatGPT Enterprise for roughly $50 a month plus usage. The setup is mostly one Docker command and an nginx reverse proxy.
Pick OpenClaw if
You want the AI to do things, not just answer questions. You want to message Telegram at 2am and have your agent pull a document, summarize a Slack thread, book a calendar slot, or run a shell command on a server. You want it to speak up proactively when it sees something in your email you should know about. You want it embedded in the tools you already use, not parked behind a login screen you have to remember to visit.
OpenClaw is also the right choice when the use case is operational rather than informational. Founder operations, triage of customer inquiries across channels, 24/7 home infrastructure monitoring, personal life logistics that span calendar, email, and group chats. Any job where the AI needs to reach into your platforms and act.
When you need both
A meaningful slice of my client base runs both on the same VPS. OpenWebUI on port 3000 for the team chat UI, OpenClaw running as a background service for the automation agent. They share the same Anthropic API key, which keeps billing in one place and lets you set a single monthly spend cap on the Anthropic side.
The sizing calculation is straightforward. Start with a 2 vCPU / 4 GB VPS for OpenClaw alone, bump to 4 vCPU / 8 GB if you are also running OpenWebUI with a handful of users, and add more RAM before you add more vCPU because neither workload is particularly compute-bound. What neither of them does
Neither one is a model trainer. Both are inference clients that call out to a model provider. If your question is "how do I self-host a model too," the answer is you run Ollama or vLLM alongside either platform and point the platform at the local endpoint. That is a separate decision about whether running your own weights is worth the GPU cost, and for most use cases the answer is no.
Neither one replaces a workflow engine like n8n or Zapier. If your need is event-driven rule-based automation ("when a new row appears in Airtable, send an email"), OpenClaw can do it but a workflow engine is simpler and more transparent. OpenClaw shines when the automation requires judgment, when you would otherwise say "and then a human decides what to do." That is the line.
Security notes when running either
OpenWebUI is safer by default because it does not take actions outside its web UI. The main thing to get right is authentication. Do not expose it to the public internet without a reverse proxy that enforces login and ideally a VPN or Tailscale restriction.
OpenClaw requires more thought because it does take actions. Every skill that touches the outside world has to be reasoned about. A Gmail skill can read and send mail on your behalf. A shell skill can run commands. Credentials should be scoped per workspace, exec should be allowlist-only in production, and untrusted input (group chats, webhooks) should be sandboxed. Frequently asked questions
Is OpenClaw built on OpenWebUI?
No. They are independent projects with different architectures, different runtimes, and different goals. The naming similarity is coincidental.
Can OpenClaw send messages to an OpenWebUI chat?
Not directly, and you probably do not want it to. The OpenWebUI audience is humans at a keyboard. If you want OpenClaw to message a human, use the channels it is designed for: Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, email.
Which one has better model support?
OpenWebUI supports more providers out of the box because chat is a simpler integration than agent tool-use. OpenClaw is intentionally opinionated toward Anthropic because tool-use quality and response stability matter more than provider count for agent work. This is a deliberate tradeoff, not a gap.
Which one has better RAG?
OpenWebUI has a richer built-in RAG setup for document Q&A. OpenClaw can do RAG via custom skills but does not ship with a document portal out of the box. If document Q&A is your primary need, use OpenWebUI.
Can I migrate from one to the other?
There is no migration path because they do not solve the same problem. If you picked OpenWebUI and later want an agent, you add OpenClaw alongside it, you do not swap.
